Medium: Pencil on Bristol Vellum Paper | 11” x 14”

 Sketching has always been my preferred medium; there’s a certain magic in how pencil brings life to paper.

Traveling is another passion of mine, and my first visit to Florence, Italy left me awestruck — especially when I entered the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo’s original David. Seeing this masterpiece in person was breathtaking.

This sketch captures my favorite perspective of David — focusing on the humble sling he used to conquer Goliath. Though it seems like a simple tool, to me it represents a force greater than himself, a powerful protection we all carry within.

Standing before Michelangelo’s work was surreal, but I noticed many visitors rushing by, snapping photos without truly pausing to appreciate the wonder before them. It reminded me how often we hurry through life’s simple miracles without truly being present.

Michelangelo’s belief that “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it” resonates deeply with me. I believe this applies to all of us — we are sculptors of our own lives, called to uncover and shape the greatness within.
